Insights - Expanded Safety Rules with Greater Flexibility for Thresholds, Layering, & In-Flight Notifications

Need / Problem

Customers need greater flexibility when defining Insights safety events. Rather than relying only on fixed, predefined rules, users should be able to create rules by combining multiple flight parameters and operational conditions.

The desired experience: User selects the primary parameter/event, defines the triggering criteria, applies additional conditions, selects the applicable aircraft, assigns severity, and specifies how long the conditions must persist before an event is generated, ability to layer rules on top of each other.

Requested Rule Builder Capability

Users should be able to combine or layer multiple conditions within the same rule, including:

  • Duration / time

  • Altitude / AGL

  • Ground speed / airspeed where available

  • Pitch

  • Vertical speed / ascent / descent

  • G-loading

  • Pitch rate

  • Roll rate

  • Yaw rate

  • Specific aircraft or groups of aircraft

  • Primary and Secondary rule stacked within the same rule (Negative G Loading & Excessive Pitch Down)

For numerical parameters, the user should be able to choose logic such as:

Above: greater than a defined value
Below: less than a defined value
Between: within a defined minimum and maximum range

Rules should continue to support configurable Low, Medium, and High severity levels, with different thresholds for each severity.

Where multiple severity thresholds are met, the event should be classified using the highest applicable severity (example: stacked rules - low severity for primary rule + low severity for secondary rule occur = High or Medium Severity for entire rule).

Example Rules Requested

Rule

Example Criteria / Conditions

Excessive Pitch Down

Pitch < -40°, plus configurable duration

Excessive Descent Rate Above 500 ft AGL

Vertical speed threshold, aircraft >500 ft AGL, optional ground-speed condition, duration

Excessive Pitch Up

Pitch > +40°, altitude condition, duration

Excessive Yaw Rate

Yaw rate > defined threshold, duration

Extended Low-Level Flight / High Ground Speed

Altitude between approximately 200–300 ft AGL, ground-speed threshold, duration

Negative G Loading

Example severity thresholds: Low <0.6G, Medium <0.4G, High <0.2G, duration

Positive G Loading

Increasing positive-G thresholds by severity; exact thresholds to be confirmed with customer

Low-Level High Speed

Ground-speed threshold + altitude threshold + duration

Pitch Rate

Example: Low >12°/sec, Medium >15°/sec, High >20°/sec, duration

Roll Rate

Roll-rate threshold(s), duration; exact severity thresholds to be confirmed

Bonus: Real-Time / In-Flight Notifications

A significant additional improvement would be the ability to evaluate designated safety rules and send notifications during flight rather than only after post-flight processing.

Operator should be able to configure notifications to designated Operations/Safety personnel while the aircraft is airborne.

This would allow ground personnel to:

  • Become aware of a potentially significant event while the flight is underway (in-flight check in), Prepare to contact or check in with the crew after landing, Escalate internally according to the operator's safety procedures.

  • Attach files
